« The Port of Reykjavik has participated in Skippers d'Islande since it was first launched in the year 2000. The Port authority is most happy to support this event, especially as it highlights both sport and culture and strengthens the ties between the two nations, Iceland and France. As a sport event, the race between Paimpol – Reykjavik – Paimpol is a great challenge. The cultural aspect associated with Skippers d'Islande is unique and focuses on the French fishermen who sailed to Iceland to fish cod during the 19th century. Their strenuous journeys demanded great sacrifices, but they were also the foundation of their livelihood in Paimpol. The third factor distinguishing Skippers d'Islande from any other race in the world is the objective of the racing committee to enhance/promote the relationship between Iceland and France.
While in Reykjavik, Skippers d'Islande adds colour to the city of Reykjavik and the port area is full of life – just like in the old days when the French fishermen from Brittany enriched the life in Reykjavik and the villages in Iceland. It is our pleasure to participate in the event for many years to come. »
